History
Our Story
The Sunstone legacy began in 1989 when the Rice family discovered 52 acres of pristine land in the Santa Ynez Valley. The property’s south-facing slopes, rocky soils, and unique microclimate proved ideal for their vision of organic wine cultivation.
The Vineyard
Planted in 1990, Sunstone’s 20-acre vineyard flourishes with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Viognier. As Santa Barbara County’s oldest continuously organically farmed vineyard, we remain committed to sustainable practices.
The Villa
Completed in 2004 after five years of meticulous construction, the 8,500-square-foot Sunstone Villa is an architectural masterpiece built entirely from reclaimed French materials. Fred and Linda Rice personally selected limestone from historic chateaus in Provence, Normandy, and Loire Valley, along with wood beams and roof tiles from a 19th-century Victorian lavender factory in Avignon.
Luxury Accommodations
The Villa features five luxury suites with private baths, eight fireplaces, and a billiards room. Multiple terraces and patios offer sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and vineyard estate. The centerpiece courtyard, complete with fireplace, provides an intimate setting for enjoying Sunstone wines.

Today, Sunstone Villa stands as a testament to the Rice family’s vision, offering an authentic French Provincial experience in the heart of California wine country.
